The structural choice drives nearly every equipment decision that follows. Polycarbonate panels insulate better than single-layer film; consider site, budget, and whether the structure is permanent or relocatable.

Check local permit requirements — many jurisdictions require a permit for structures over 200 sq ft.

A level, well-drained site is essential. Gravel provides drainage; a weed barrier keeps the floor clean and stable.

Orient the ridge east–west to maximize solar exposure through the day.

Heating capacity is measured in BTU/hr. Unit heaters suit larger spaces; heat mats provide bottom heat under seedling benches.

Vent any gas-fired heater to the exterior — never run unvented combustion inside a greenhouse.

Target roughly one air exchange per minute in peak summer. Shutter exhaust fans paired with circulation fans keep temperature and humidity in range.

For a 10×16×8 ft house (~1,280 cu ft), a ~1,300 CFM exhaust fan gives about one air change per minute.

Drip irrigation reduces foliar wetness and labor. A timer-controlled system with a backflow preventer suits most small greenhouses.

Use pressure-compensating emitters if your supply pressure varies.

Wire or slatted benches drain freely and allow air movement. Galvanized or aluminum resists humid conditions far better than wood.

Wi-Fi sensors let you catch unexpected cold nights or overheating remotely.

This step is more than lights: full-spectrum LED fixtures plus the power distribution to run them — outdoor-rated cords, weatherproof strips, timers, and switched or smart outlets for control.

Use outdoor/GFCI-rated power for any wet-location run inside the greenhouse.
